Magdalena Yost

December 19, 1930 — November 26, 2022

Kamas, UT

Magdalena Yost passed away early on November 26, 2022 just 23 days shy of her 92nd birthday.

She was born in Bamberg Germany on December 19, 1930 to Georg and Anna Steinfelder.  She was the 4th child in a family of 8 children.  Her dad was drafted to be a soldier in WWII when she was 14 and died in a prison camp shortly thereafter, leaving her mom to raise all 8 children on her own, with the youngest only 2 years old at the time.

She met her husband Arthur Yost while he served in Germany during the Korean War as a military policeman.  In 1954 she left Germany and went to Canada for a year to work as a nanny before moving to the United States to marry Arthur in Modesto California on May 8, 1955. In 1972 they moved to Farris Oklahoma where they purchased 160 acres and raised their 3 boys. Arthur died in 1986, leaving her a widow at the young age of 56.  She sold the property in 1994 and moved to Kamas, Utah where she lived for 28 years.

Magdalena was a seamstress by trade in Germany and made many clothes for her children and others.  She worked at Walmart in Atoka, Oklahoma and this is where her love of quilting began.  She made her first quilt while working there that was proudly hung on display.  She loved making them for family and friends, making sure each grandchild received at least one, specially made for them.  When she moved to Utah, she continued to work for Walmart located in Park City and joined the local quilting guild. Once she retired, she began making more quilts, making several hundred during her lifetime.  One year she made over 100 baby quilts that were donated to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

She loved to travel and loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and spending time with them.  They were the highlight of her life.

She is survived by her three sons, Robert (Shirley) Yost, Jim (Amy) Yost, and Yorby (Brenda) Yost, 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
