Robert Gilmore

September 26, 1927 — February 2, 2024

Our cherished brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather Robert Wayne Gilmore, passed away February 2, 2024, in Evanston, Wyoming.

Robert was born in Cumberland, Wyoming, on September 26, 1927, to Joseph Gilmore and Elizabeth Sarah Cook. He grew up on the Gilmore ranch in Hilliard and attended the one-room Hilliard schoolhouse through his junior year of high school. His senior year of high school was at Evanston High School.

In 1943 Robert attended the 2nd Ward Church Dance, where he met Myrtle Bateman. She would often say, "I saw him at that dance, and I knew I never wanted to let him go; he was the one for me."

After Robert returned from serving for the US Army in World War II, they were married on July 22, 1949, in Woodruff. Robert and Myrtle were also members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden Temple on December 20, 1997. Myrtle and Robert were married 72 years.

Robert and Myrtle lived in their family home on Elm Street their whole lives in a house that Robert built himself. He was very good at building and fixing things, and lived by the credo "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

Robert traveled with Myrtle and other family members all over North America. Robert loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling into his 90's.

He is survived by his children, Janis (Richard) Hatch, Joe (Jody) Gilmore, and Donald Gilmore and his siblings Flora Wagstaff and Amy Gay Narramore, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Robert is preceded by his parents, Joseph Gilmore and Elizabeth Sarah Cook, his brothers Fred, Bud, Lloyd, Junior, and Gary Gilmore, and his sisters Ellen Lester and Betty Scholz.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, February 8, at 12:00 pm, with a viewing from 10:30 - 11:45 am at the LDS Elm Street chapel. Interment will follow in the Evanston City Cemetery.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Cowboy Cares, especially ShyAnne, for their loving care to Robert during his final days.
