Emblem

In loving memory of Lowell Winterton Walker “Oak” or  “Old Man on the Mountain”

(1933-2024).

Lowell Winterton Walker chose to leave this earthly life in the early morning hours of February 29, 2024 at his home in Woodland, Utah. He passed peacefully into the open arms of his Savior and the many loved ones waiting for him. His battle with pancreatic cancer was much longer than expected, this stubborn strength surprising nobody who knew and loved him.

Born in Heber City, Utah, May 4, 1933 to Clarence Lamont Walker and Luella (Winterton), who owned the famous Woodland Cash Store on Highway 35. He learned hard work, ingenuity and generosity from his parents. He learned to love music as a child, a life long attachment that only grew and expanded over the years and was shared unselfishly with those around him.

He was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on May 4, 1941 in the hot springs in Midway, Utah, and confirmed December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was a dedicated member of the church his whole life and, every day, sought to embody the teachings of his Savior. He sought to love and serve in his many callings over the years, and eventually as Bishop of the Woodland Ward.

Lowell attended Brigham Young University prior to enlisting into the Army in 1953 and eventually stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California where he met his beautiful wife, Helena Cornelia Snel. They were married for time and all eternity on June 21, 1955 in the Salt Lake City, Utah temple. Lowell and Helen both wanted to begin their family soon, and they had eight beautiful children together. Lowell loved spending time with each and every one of his children. He often shared stories of their many camping adventures and the times he’d take his daughters on work trips with him. His love of being outside included not just camping, but working out in nature. If he could be outside, that’s where he wanted to be. He always had a project in the yard. This influence can be seen in his children and grandchildren, who all have fond memories of being outside in nature with the Old Man on the Mountain.

Lowell worked in the insurance industry, which often gave him the opportunity to travel, which he enjoyed as he was able to see new places and meet new people. He was always friendly and ready to share a joke or funny story, or even to dawn a silly hat or accessory. If you were lucky enough to meet him, he probably tried to make  you laugh  at  least once. His life wasn’t without hardships, which he did his best to follow the example of the Savior and confront with love and compassion.

Later in life, Lowell and Helena adopted four of their grandchildren after the early passing of their daughter Rachel Ann. Being able to care for them brought him great joy. Family was elementally important to him. Even while his children were young, Lowell and Helen would foster children who needed a safe place. He truly believed that the Lord would provide as long as he was following the gospel.

He began running and completing marathons including: the San Francisco Marathon, Boston Marathon, Pikes Peak Marathon, Bloomsday Marathon, Saint George Marathon and he completed the Deseret News Pioneer Day Marathon 20 years in a row.

Lowell was an avid reader and was always ready to share his learnings with those around him. He loved his family and often wrote them letters to share his thoughts and love for them. You never knew if you’d open up the mailbox and have a letter signed by the Old Man on the Mountain waiting for you.

He will be remembered for his strength, love, sense of humor, work ethic, music, compassion, storytelling, joy for life and kindness.

Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Lamont Walker and Luella (Winterton) and his daughter Rachel.

Lovingly survived by his wife Helena, son Lamont (Lori) and their children Brandon (Jess) and their children, Jordan (Veronica) and their children, Tyson (Joanna) and their children, Nicole (Eric Hall), Austin (Meg) and their children, Natalie (Ryan Rosenacker) and their children, Alisha (Jordan Nickle), Lauren, Trenton; daughter Luana (Frank) and their children, Sunni, Brian, Shanna (Vince Coleman) and their children, Kirk (Cambria) and their children, Chad and Jenna; daughter Corry Sue (Doug Cutler) and their children, Sheila and her children, Angi (Jerred Sundquist) and her children, Nicki and her children, Jessica (Serene) and her children, Carson (Alexandria) and their child, Connor, Colton; daughter Faith (Curtis Ryan) and their children, Lindsey (Josh Maxfield) and their children, Garrett (McKenna) and their children, Clayton, Mitchel (Abbey) and their children; son Nico (Heidi) and their children, Cassidy (Jacob Potter) and their children, Deena (Erik Tita) and their child, Phebe; son Nathan (Lynette) and their children, Nicholas, Josie and Lainee; daughter Melissa and her children, Collin, Will and Leah; daughter Kogetsu Shauna and her children, Sani and Ida; daughter Billie Jean and her children Alonnah, Braylon and Brevon; daughter Chandra (Austin McKell) and their children Reese, Grant and Theodore; daughter Natasha (Ryan Card) and their children Emmett, Quinn and Miles.
