Lois Jeanene Peterson Carlile

February 13, 1931 — November 27, 2023

Woodland

Lois Jeanene Peterson Carlile, 92,  passed peacefully, surrounded by her family on November 27, 2023. She was born on Friday the 13th of February, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Noel W. Peterson and Irma Ilene Pack. She was the third of five siblings. Fred, Veon, Lucy, and Beverly. She was raised in Woodland, Utah where she learned the value of hard work at an early age. There were always cows to milk, wood to be stacked and hay to be hauled. She attended school in Kamas and graduated from South Summit High School where she participated in many extracurricular activities including student government and cheerleading.

Mom met the love of her life by chance of fate. John J Carlile had built a chicken coop housing 1000 chickens on his parents’ farm. The coop collapsed due to snow, so John was going from neighbor to neighbor asking for space to keep his chickens. Well, Noel happened to have an empty coop and the rest is history. Mom and dad were married on June 1, 1949, later solemnized in the Idaho Falls, Temple. Mom and dad were a formidable force on the dance floor. From the Hotel Utah to the great salt air, they danced to many of the big bands of the era. You can bet that they are dancing now! John passed in 1986. Mom married Bill Dudley in 1988. He was killed in a tragic accident on our farm. Even though it was short, they were 10 months of extreme happiness. Mom always said, “I’ve been dealt 2 aces. I’m not playing anymore.”

Lois attended college at University of Utah, where she played 3rd base on the women’s soft ball team. She had a great throwing arm that she attributed to throwing rocks at the outhouse where her brother Fred would hide when it was his turn to milk.
She completed her degree in teaching at BYU and went on to teach at Wasatch High School, in Heber City for 38 years. She taught English, Health Education, and Girls PE, where she became a friend and positive influence for four generations of Heber Valley young women. Mrs. “C” was always available for talks, advice, and hugs. She managed drill team, and coached all the girls’ sports, taking her teams to many region and state championships.

In 1964 and 1965, Lois and John were able to fulfill a dream and adopted Elisa and John. These two children were wanted and loved beyond belief. Mom took a few years off from teaching to stay home with the kids, but eventually went back to Wasatch, taking us with her. It was always a treat when she or dad had extra work to do after school hours. It was a thrilling experience when she would unlock the equipment room and turn us loose in the gym!
Lois faced everything she did in life with determination and dedication. She loved sewing and gardening, often working out in the yard from sunup to sundown. Lunch with the senior citizens followed by a competitive but fun game of Canasta were weekly joys. She would always be there if you needed anything, from a strong shoulder to a sympathetic ear. She was a true and loyal friend.

Lois is survived by her Daughter Lisa Carlile Stauffer and her son John A. Carlile.
Grandchildren, Trevor Ropelato, Rachel Stauffer, Noel (Todd) Broadhead and great Grandson Harlow Dimmick.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husbands John and Bill, and a great-grandson Ty Rex Broadhead.

“100 years from now it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house
I lived in or how much money I had. But the world may be different because
I was important in the life of a child.”
